Borough of Diego Martin
About The Region
Diego Martin in Trinidad and Tobago has a diverse history that spans centuries. Before European colonization, it was home to indigenous peoples. Spanish, Dutch, and French influences characterized its early colonial history. With British rule, it became a center for sugarcane cultivation, but the decline of the sugar industry and the emancipation of slaves led to economic diversification. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Diego Martin transitioned into a suburban, residential area, and it remains a key part of the country’s urban landscape today. Its history reflects the broader narrative of Trinidad and Tobago, with indigenous roots, colonial legacies, and post-independence development.
